Abstract:

In this study, we compare several methods to detect interactions within P&C pricing models: a traditional statistical test, and three methods from machine learning (random forest, gradient boosting machine, and LASSO). For each of these approaches, we keep GLM to compute final tariffs, for operational purposes. Each method is tested on artificial datasets, representing three types of phenomena: variables correlation, unbalanced distributions, and main-effects intensity. LASSO ultimately stands out for its predictive performance, but also for its operational assets. A concrete implementation methodology within a pricing process is finally suggested.
